Airfield Self-Inspection, [Airport name]

Inspected by [Inspector name] on [Inspection date and time]. Weather: [Weather conditions].

Airports that accept federal grants promise to keep the airfield in safe, serviceable condition. A regular walk or drive of the airfield, written down each time, is the simplest way to catch problems early and show that you look after the airport. Check each item, note anything wrong in the log at the end, and close the runway or area if a problem is a hazard.

Runways and taxiways

  • Pavement is free of loose stones, debris and other objects that could damage an aircraft.
  • No new cracks, holes, heaving or broken edges large enough to catch a tire.
  • No standing water, ice or snow left after clearing.
  • Turf runways and safety areas are mowed, firm and free of ruts and animal holes.
  • Runway safety areas are clear of equipment, vehicles and stored items.

Markings and signs

  • Runway numbers, edges and hold lines are visible and not badly faded.
  • Signs are standing, readable and lit where required.
  • The wind cone moves freely, is not torn and is lit for night use.

Lighting

  • Runway and taxiway edge lights work; note any that are out or broken.
  • The beacon turns and shows the right colors.
  • Pilot-controlled lighting comes on when keyed, if the airport has it.
  • Approach aids such as PAPI or VASI lights work, if the airport has them.

Fencing, gates and wildlife

  • Perimeter fence has no gaps, washouts under it or fallen sections.
  • Gates close and lock as intended.
  • No signs of deer, coyotes or large flocks of birds on the airfield. Note any sightings.
  • No new trees, structures or equipment that stick up near the runway ends.

Fuel and ramp areas

  • No fuel leaks or stains at the fuel farm, pumps or hoses.
  • Fire extinguishers are in place, charged and inspected.
  • Spill kit is stocked.
  • Tie-down anchors and ropes are in good condition.
